Ideally, we'd either upgrade our forum software or use different software. We've been talking about doing one or the other for quite some time. It is indeed very expensive. I've been working with a PhpBB forum integration and I think the software is very nice although a bit different from the one we had. www.ambitionsnowskates.com/forum
The last back-ups I have are from August 14th (both the archive and the forums). Maybe the host can recover more recent data of the database though.
Should we set-up a temporary forum in the mean time, so we can have a more private discussion? SMF or otherwise, anything is fine.
I have an idea. Ask everyone on the forum to pitch in a dollar or two to get an upgrade.

I think that even if we install the new version of IPB, a lot of our custom code will break. And I don't think a pirate copy is the way to go, for various reasons. Anyway, we probably won't be able to do much until Thanksgiving week.
We're not concerned as much with the damage that's been done already as with the fact that others could do the same with even more malicious intent.

I used to go on the forums every day too, but my experience was stained by moderators who were just destroying, like smoofano. Most of the admins are sensible guys, but I just hacked you because I found the vunerability, I just wanted to get at Smoofano and show you that there was somthing wrong. If something isn't done, this is going to happen to you too. I might even pay for a newer version if I had the money, which I don't.

Hmm...I agree upon the temporary forum idea, it just seems the most ideal for everybody. While I do not post often, I am on the boards typically for up to an hour every night. It's just nice to burn time by reading about projects and help requests (especially if the help requests were answered). Regardless, the GMG should be brought back as soon as possible, though, if you do want to stick with IPB, but don't have the cash, I'd suggest that you start offering advertisement space on the forums (small, like the ones now, or rather were) to at least cover the cost. Who knows what will happen, but anyway it goes, I wish good luck to all of you Admins out there or any members who are trying to resolve this issue.
If there's anything I could do to help out, I'd be more than happy. :)

i recommend you go with a free software like phpbb and mybb, i have been using those and they are great( www.burningice-games.com/forums). Dont go for pirated stuff and certainly dont go for so much costly stuff while free substitutes are available....

Well I'm in favor of adding a donation box and opening temp forums until it's fixed. $150-$300 is not that much for this many people to raise. If you guys add one, I will personally donate to it.

To add, anyone can stumble upon a flaw in code on random occasions. I found an sql leak in the state's science fair website. It's not that hard.
That being said, I press this foward: stevenup should be banned. Seriously. He's useless to the community as is, he has a horribly n00bish track record with his "I'm making an OS compiled in an EXE file", and then he finds a code flaw in the website and instead of doing something minor like putting a note in the admin's code or something, he breaks the whole system. This is ridiculous. Ban him.

Good luck with decrypting a md5 hashed password. You have no clue what you are talking about, all you did was Google IPB exploits on older versions of the software and followed the steps. Although this is a terrible thing to have happened, I think it could have been prevented if they had upgraded sooner than later. As for tthe code not being compatible, it could probably be fixed within a few weeks which is probably less time than this will take.

This is the last time I'm going to say this, I did not "break teh systems" I wrote a news story, banned Smoofano, and destroyed a hidden forum. The administrators then took down the site to stop others from using the simple vunerability to gain more access and potentially cause more havok.

Nope, it was me. Just a note to all of you guys, I was banned long before in June by smoof, and for good reasons too. I hate you guys and always will, most of you, are all a bunch of faggots. I hacked the site because I wanted to get back at you for the hardship you taught me. There were supportive people here and there, who have also been shoved into my position. You can't call people idiots for not trying, my first game was a disaster, but I was proud of it, all I wanted to do was make a game that I hoped other people would enjoy, but all you cared about was the fact it was an example rip off, blah blah blah, I used that tutorial, because thats what theyre there for. For teaching people to learn, thanks to this I tried to code games on my own, at a stage that was too early, I failed, I made a pacman clone that some people gave constructive critisism, like BMF, and I agree with what he said to me about that game, but there were others that just simply hated it. Planet X was turning out to be a good game, but thanks to an unclear deadline of a gmclans competition (Thanks Serillious.. =P) we released it too early. I then made a game that was supposed to look like a retro game, and I said its going to be like a DOS game or somthing, then people started saying, LOL LOOKS GHEYER THAN TEH VCS! And I put in the challenge that you cannot jump, and some people said that this was stupid.. I made more and more games, and they never got better because you just flamed me on them. I wish I never came across ye. And I hope the newer members who have just joined and love the shite, will do the sensible thing and never come back. I hacked, I stopped, I wish I had done more damage. Oh yes, and sendla's coming great, it can run Wolfenstein 3D, and Im satisfied with it. Have you ever visted an Internet bank? Certainly not. Every bank I know of uses a password that changes every time you enter it and you cannot choose those passwords by yourself. (I don't even want to know of those where you use a static password chosen by yourself.)
Of course, you could probably access some ebay accounts or something like that, but what benefits would they give to you anyway?
Thus, I'm quite sure that even a free IPB forum uses an encryption so strong that it is almost impossible (or impossible) to break it without a supercomputer. (or even with).
Also, you should realize that hacking passwords is illegall because it violates privacy.

I'm really sorry that my actions lead to the GMG forum being taken down. I shouldn't get mad at other people because of their opinions about my games.

What I was saying was the community was on the decline due to Serrelelious. Both supported the opinion. I'm not saying they're saying it's a bad forum. But, it is Serr's fault it's on the decline. Which is the point I was making: even though I don't hold Serr in high regards, I wasn't going to let an unjust stab go at him.

Anyway, I'll apologize to anyone I offended last post with the insults. I was a bit hot headed at the time for various issues and released some anger unduely on people instead of holding it in like usual. And for that, I apologise.

Well, the purpose kinda changed when the staff (mainly Xemrel) was drawing more attention towards the EXP-system. It's a pretty unique approach for a game making related forum and lotsa people thought we should use that feature more to portray ourselves. However, teamwork is still encouraged (hence the name of the forum) but it rather shifted towards working in team to increase skills. Just a trend amongst members I guess.
And if you want to held anyone responsible for the decline in activity then you could indeed point towards Serrellious, but hell, give the man a life. And after all a community stands and falls on its members. (a lot of the original and talented ones got more involved in academic life, which I consider a major cause of the activity drop)
Ah well, it's still enjoyable for a lot of people, so that's what counts after all :)
Obviously most stevenup posts are no as himself. The whole sheep thing would be beastathon and the others could be from people like st. jimmy, lep, coyote,or all those other people who have a bad sense of humor.
I didn't read most of these comments (who can blame me?).
Anyhow, Stevenup7002, if you were actually interested in the well-being of the site's security, you should have PMed an Admin about it.
Instead, you hacked two admin's account, made posts under their names, and merged several of the off-topic threads into the Personal Thread (let alone whatever else you did that I'm not aware of).
I don't know you personally, and for the most part I'm sure your not an idiot, or an asshole, but you went too far, beyond the good of the site and its security. From the looks of it, you were simply interested in provoking further hostility from a group of people you've come to dislike.
You're going to be banned from the GMG of course. That will most likely be the only course of action set against you. So, I would stop trying to apologize. You're not going to receive forgiveness from very many at the GMG.
Any decisions yet on what to do?

Man, I saw about this a few days back on 64digits.
Really sorry about the whole thing - I never visited GMG very much to tell the truth, but it's a shame there has to be people out there that can't handle simple problems without harming others.
